Common Myths About Labour and Birth – Debunked by Your Midwives at Dr Stephen Cole’s Rooms

Introduction

When it comes to labour and birth, everyone has an opinion — from well-meaning family members to stories shared online. With so much information swirling around, it can be hard to know what’s fact and what’s fiction.

As midwives working closely with women every day in Dr Stephen Cole’s rooms, we’re here to clear up some common myths we hear all the time and help you feel calm, confident, and informed as you prepare to meet your baby.

Myth 1: “You’ll know exactly when labour starts.”

Many people imagine labour beginning with a dramatic gush of waters or unmistakably strong contractions.

Reality: Early labour often begins quietly. You may notice backache, cramping, or irregular tightenings that come and go. For some women, their waters don’t break until much later — or not at all until we break them in hospital.

If you’re ever unsure, that’s okay.
We’d much rather you call us than sit at home worrying. Support is always just a phone call away.

Myth 2: “Induction always leads to a caesarean.”

This is one of the biggest fears we hear from women booked for induction.

Reality: The majority of women who are induced still have a vaginal birth. Induction is recommended when it’s safer for mum or baby, and there are many gentle, stepwise methods we use before moving to more active measures.

Induction doesn’t mean your birth has to be difficult — with the right support, it can be a very positive experience.

Myth 3: “You need to give birth without pain relief to have a ‘natural’ birth.”

We hear this one often, and it puts unnecessary pressure on women.

Reality: Every birth is natural — because it’s your birth.
Gas, morphine, water, TENS machines, and epidurals are all legitimate tools that can help you feel more in control.

There’s no award for going without pain relief. What matters is that you feel safe, supported, and comfortable.

Myth 4: “A caesarean section is the easy way out.”

This myth is not only untrue — it can be hurtful.

Reality: A caesarean is major surgery, and women who deliver this way deserve just as much respect, care, and support as those who birth vaginally. Caesareans often happen for very good medical reasons and are a safe, important option.

However your baby enters the world, your birth matters.

Myth 5: “Your birth plan must go exactly to plan.”

We love when women come in with preferences — it helps us understand what matters to you.

Reality: Birth can be unpredictable, and flexibility is key. Think of your plan as a guide rather than a strict set of instructions.

Our job is to support your wishes while also responding to the needs of you and your baby on the day.

Final Thoughts

Every woman’s labour and birth is unique. Some unfold quickly, some take time, and some involve unexpected turns — and all of these experiences are valid.

As your midwives, our priority is that you feel informed, supported, and heard throughout your pregnancy and birth. When you understand your options and feel empowered to make decisions — whether that involves pain relief, induction, or a caesarean — your birth can be a positive and meaningful experience.

We’re here to guide you, reassure you, and adapt with you as your labour progresses. Our goal is always the same:
a safe outcome, achieved with kindness, respect, and care.

There is incredible strength in every birth story. And the more myths we replace with understanding, the more confident and empowered women can feel as they bring their babies into the world.
